Understanding Trauma and Fostering Resilience When Working with Afghan Refugee Students and Their Families
A Three-Part Series

This series is presented by Child Trends, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, research center based in Bethesda, Maryland, that conducts research on children, children's families, child well-being, and factors affecting children's lives. Each session in the series is designed to serve educators, school administrators, counselors, social workers, and other professional service providers that work with refugee students and their families. Participants may attend a stand-alone session, or they may attend multiple sessions. Attendees can receive 1 hour of Act 48 credits for each session attended.

The information for Session 1: Understanding Trauma and Resilience is below:

  • Title: Session 1: Understanding Trauma and Resilience
  • Date: Thursday, November 2, 2023
  • Time: 3 pm to 4 pm ET
  • Presenter: Brandon Stratford
  • Description: Receive an introduction to concepts related to trauma and resilience. Understanding these terms, as well as exploring the research and best practices surrounding these topics, will help teachers and service providers deliver sensitive and effective care to the refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking youth and families that they serve.

The goals of this session are both to increase knowledge and gain confidence to share key concepts with your colleagues. Schools that integrate trauma-informed practices and research into their approach to working with refugee students and families actively cultivate environments that are safe and supportive spaces for students, families, and staff. This session will also include opportunities to engage in break-out discussions to foster peer learning.
  • Act 48 credit will be offered for this session. Please be sure to provide your PPID in order to receive the credit.
