Title: AI-Enhanced Intelligent Science Stations to Improve Inquiry-Based STEM Learning & Engagement in Afterschool and Summer Programs

Description: Intelligent Science Stations use innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based mixed-reality technology, to provide personalized interactive feedback to children as they do experiments and discoveries in the real world, improving STEM learning and engagement, while also encouraging 21st century skills like critical thinking, persistence and collaboration. Our research at Carnegie Mellon University with thousands of children, in both informal and formal learning settings, has shown that this type of inquiry-focused AI support not only enhances students’ learning of science principles and engineering practices but also keeps them engaged 4X longer than the same station without AI support. It also produces higher quality scientific conversations between caregivers and children. Our research has also demonstrated that Intelligent Science Stations (norilla.org), along with our curriculum aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, significantly improve children’s STEM learning and critical thinking skills (10X greater than natural yearly progression). In this session, we will talk about our research findings as well as ways to incorporate AI in the most effective way in afterschool and summer programs to lead to the best learning and engagement outcomes.

Presenter: Dr. Nesra Yannier, Senior Systems Scientist and Special Faculty at Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute and founder of NoRILLA (Novel Research-based Intelligent Lifelong Learning Apparatus)
