DESCRIPTION:  

Literacy in the Content Areas, will provide researched based instruction, modeling of lessons and strategies, and ongoing feedback to participants who will learn the roles reading, writing, listening, speaking play in the content areas and how the demands of literacy change with age and grade. Participants will recognize and address literacy difficulties and develop strategies to make data based instructional decisions. They will learn how to provide students greater access to text for learning in the content areas.

Participants will:

  • Understand the role that reading, writing, listening, speaking play in the content areas and how the demands of literacy change with age and grade
  • Delineate the demands of literacy in various disciplines and develop strategies to meet those demands
  • Recognize and address literacy difficulties and develop strategies to make data based instructional decisions
  • Learn how to provide students greater access to text for learning in the content areas
  • Use a variety of assessments for instructional planning and decision making
  • Learn how to model and embed key strategies into content area classes and will be able to make changes in their classroom practices, resulting in increased student engagement and efficacy in reading to learn.
  • Use a variety of strategies to help young people develop the knowledge, strategies, and motivation to become more powerful readers
  • Intensify the working relationship between coach and teacher.Experience a Before, During and After (BDA) conferencing format around a model lesson

DETAILS: 

  • Date(s):  November 12, December 3 and December 16, 2020 
  • Location: Zoom Training (IMPORTANT: You MUST be registered in the CSIU Registration system to receive the Zoom information provided by email prior to event. This link will be unique and is utilized for Act48 reporting (see Act48 below). You MUST use the same email you registered with when attending the Zoom event.  
  • Time: 8:00 am to 11:30 am
  • Cost:  $75 (includes all three dates listed above)
  • Target Audience: K-12 content area teachers, instructional coachesm special ed teachers, reading specialists and administrators
  • Registration Deadline: Tuesday, November 10, 2020 by 12:00 pm. 
  • Act 48 hours: 11.0 (must attend entire event to earn Act 48 hours. No partial hours will be given. The CSIU will upload Act 48 hours to the PDE PERMS system). Only registered users will receive Act48 hours.  Anyone requesting Act 48 hours must provide the correct PPID# and provide proof of attendance (at face-to-face events you must sign-in and sign-out and a Zoom event you must remain in the training the entire length of time).
  • Evaluation:  a link will be provided by the presenter.  Anyone wishing to receive Act48 hours MUST complete an evaluation. The evaluation must be completed by end of day.
