Description:
This session will cover a wide range of topics related to preparing for puberty in individuals with developmental disabilities. Topics such as understanding body changes, encouraging proper hygiene, understanding appropriate behaviors in public versus private settings, as well as how to help individuals understand boundaries and relationship expectations will be addressed. This session will be beneficial for both families of individuals with disabilities and school/community staff that support the individuals outside of the home setting.
Participants will:
1. Understand how to explain body changes and personal hygiene to individuals with disabilities as they enter puberty
2. Develop an understanding of how to teach individuals with disabilities the difference between private and public behaviors related to sexuality and what is expected in each situation
3. Discuss the issues related to individuals with disabilities as they learn boundaries in developing and maintaining relationships
