DESCRIPTION:
LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is professional development that provides teachers with the skills they need to master the fundamentals of reading instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and language. This powerful course is authored by literacy experts Dr. Louisa Moats and Dr. Carol Tolman.
Professional learning that comes from LETRS is relevant and applicable regardless of the literacy programs already in use within your state, district, or school. LETRS leverages decades of research including the latest neuroscience that reveals how we learn to read and how to teach reading with effective instruction. The content is translated into everyday classroom success in a way that is most relevant and empowering to educators. It is presented in flexible, online, and face-to-face delivery models.
DETAILS:
This course will begin with the receipt of your book in August, 2021. We will cover Units 1 and 2 only. There will be a virtual introduction to the online learning system on September 1, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Participation in this session is required. Live trainings will be held at the CSIU on Thursday, October 28, 2021 and Wednesday, January 12, 2022. These sessions will begin at 8:30 am and end by 3:30 pm. Participation is required and you may need a substitute for these days. Lunch will be on your own each day.
Date/Time/Location: September 1, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 pm - VIRTUAL, Thursday, October 28, 2021 and Wednesday, January 12, 2022- 8:30-3:30- IN PERSON at CSIU
Cost: Cost for this course is $400 and includes a book, one-year access to online learning modules, and two face-to-face workshops. Books will be shipped to your preferred address. Completion of the course will be worth up to 86 Act 48 hours for completing Units 1-4. Online learning should begin in September 2021 and will end on January 12, 2022. Participants will be able to participate in Units 3 and 4, planned for March 15, 2022 and May 25, 2022, for no additional costs.
Registration Deadline: August 13, 2021, Late registrations will incur a $10 fee for individual shipping and handling of the book. There will be no refunds on cancellations after August 13, 2021.
MORE INFORMATION:
Beginning in the fall, LETRS Third Edition will be available across the state as an IU CPE Course. If participants want, they can earn 3 credit hours (and 90 Act 48 hours) for four different LETRS courses, totaling 12 credits. PDE recognizes CPE credits when used for Instructional II certification, Bachelors/Masters Equivalency, and Act 48 requirements.
