Event Information

Description:

The intent of these sessions is to keep teachers in the field of literacy, updated on what current research that has proven to work in the areas of assessment, intervention, and instruction for all readers.

Reading difficulties are the most common cause of academic failure and underachievement. The National Assessment of Educational Progress consistently finds that about 36% of all fourth graders read at a level described as “below basic.” Informed and effective classroom instruction, especially in the early grades, can prevent and relieve the severity of many of these problems. Students who struggle with reading need specialized instruction in addition to robust regular class instruction. Competent intervention from a specialist coupled with the explicit instruction in the classroom can lessen the impact and help students overcome the most debilitating symptoms.

Participants will:
-Engage in professional discourse around a specific topics of teaching and learning.
-Discuss the importance of literacy instruction and  intervention, using data to drive  instructions and intervention implementation models.
- Share implementation strategies that support students in reaching the Common Core State Standards
-Discuss the deep foundational knowledge necessary to understand how students learn to read, write, and spell—and why some of them struggle
-Discuss the brain research incorporated when learning to read and some exciting instruction and interventions that have been developed to help all readers.

Act 48: 1 hour of act 48 will be awarded after the training
